Author Description: Shaun Barnett has tramped the length and breadth of New Zealand, including a piecemeal traverse of the Southern Alps. After working for the Department of Conservation, he turned to writing and photography, and co-wrote the Montana Award-winning Classic Tramping in New Zealand (with Rob Brown). Several other best-selling guidebooks followed. More recently, he has written books focused on backcountry history, including Shelter from the Storm: The story of New Zealand’s backcountry huts (with Rob Brown and Geoff Spearpoint), which won the New Zealand Booksellers’ Choice Award in 2013, and Tramping, A New Zealand History (with Chris Maclean) which was long listed for the Ockham Book Awards in 2016. His most recent book is Across the Pass: a collection of New Zealand tramping writing (2021). Shaun lives with his family in Wellington.
